We’ve come to expected that ‘sideways look’ from hairdresser Robert Masciave. The man is a champion in avant-garde hairdressing who somehow manages to also run a super-successful commercial salon in West London showing how adroit his is at reinvention. And this is alongside his shows and projects that are très artistique. Oh yes, the owner of Metropolis Hairdressing in Kingston upon Thames, Robert is also a familiar name on stage and on the podium accepting awards. We’re fans.
So it was with some sense of anticipation recently we attended the Mandrake hotel nestled in the heart of London’s SOHO meets NOHO area to celebrate Robert’s most recent creative project: A decorative chandelier. As one of hairdressing’s most innovative voices, Robert had been invited to embellish a chandelier designed by Lara Bohine, located in the lobby of The Mandrake. And we were keen to view.
The chandelier installation is inspired by the stalactite shape and other nature-centric elements of the chandelier. “My idea was to make its brutalist design evolve to something organic and soft. Merging metal with hair and the existing design with mine – transforming it into something more fluid,” says Robert. The internationally renowned hairdresser preserves the distinct spirit and structure of the chandelier skeleton but brings life, shape and texture through the hair. “Hair is a morphing material, capable of bringing softness, motion and emotion.”
On the same occasion, Robert also displayed ‘Soul of Man’, a sculpture and wearable made of 200m of human hair, as seen worn by Hungry, photographed by Studio Prokopiou. Masciave’s works joins other eccentric pieces from hotel owner Rami Fustok’s collection including; Salvador Dali, Francesco Clemente and Jonas Burgerr. The temporary chandelier installation, designed by Robert Masciave is available for guests to view at the lobby of The Mandrake throughout the summer season. Get along – it’s well worth the effort.
