London Eye: January 2025

Our London Eye: January 2025  is Jack Eames, a hair and beauty photographer in London with nigh on 18 years experience in the art of visual storytelling. We enjoy how he is our sharp-eyed guide for cultural morsels to tempt you out to explore what the new year has to offer, here are his suggestions on things to do, follow and talk about. We’ll leave it with Jack to explain each one:

Lost In Light

(exhibition)

“Literally around the corner from my London base at White Rabbit Studios in Shoreditch is a brilliant immersive light exhibition: Lost in Light. I had a chance to visit the installation on Curtain Road just before Christmas, and I loved every minute of it. This truly is an immersive experience, with the music and soundscapes designed by Four Tet adding to the sensory absorption. It’s not often you’re allowed to really get in the middle of installations like this, but walking into and interacting with the environments is very much encouraged! There is nothing quite like pulling up a bean bag, switching off from the outside world, and fully immersing yourself in something beautiful.

“Lost In Light is open until February 2nd so get involved while you still can.”

Burn The Ration Books of Love by Peter Alexander Jobson

(music)

“Recently I had the absolute pleasure of collaborating with singer and musician Peter Alexander Jobson (formerly of I Am Kloot). I  created the artwork for his brilliant debut album that was released at the end of 2024.

“Burn The Ration Books Of Love was recorded in Pete’s home studio and is beautiful, intimate and often autobiographical. This debut LP is a mixture of genres with nods to blues, country, jazz and more, flavoured throughout by Pete’s Northern accent and characterful voice. We had so much fun together creating the artwork for Burn The Ration Books of Love, which has us sneaking photos at building sites and setting fire to old ration books outside my studio!

“Listen to Pete’s fantastic record on all the regular streaming sites, or get yourself a physical copy with the beautifully printed artwork at Townsend Music (and spot the featured image in the album gatefold!).”

Nickel Boys

(film)

“One to check out in the cinema right now is Nickel Boys by director RaMell Ross. I didn’t know much about this movie going into it but was honestly blown away. The film follows a young black boy who is sent to an abusive reform school in 1960’s Florida.

“Nickel Boys is shot almost entirely in first person point of view, which takes a moment to acclimatise to… but once you settle in is incredibly captivating. The perspective occasionally shifts to other characters, putting the main protagonist, Elwood Curtis, into view and helping to build the audience connection with him. The cinematography is bold and artistic, with gentle pacing that builds very real and palpable tension. If you can catch it in the cinema this January it is a big recommendation from me!”

Novelty Automation

(museum/arcade)

“Novelty Automation is a quirky little space less than 10 minutes walk from Holborn station in London. ‘Museum’ doesn’t quite capture it – rather this is an interactive amusement arcade with hand-crafted machines by artist and engineer Tim Hunkin.

“It is such a fun space for kids and adults alike that blends amazing craftsmanship with satire and humour. I was especially enraptured by the charming wooden animatronics and how the machines embrace weirdness in all forms. Novelty Automation is endearingly rough around the edges and sure to leave a smile on your face.”

Enjoy the moment
