Rethinking plastic is vital if we are to defend our planet from further damage, and improve future prospects for the environment. This is an urgent call to action.
Every day, we hear more and more about how brands are working to protect the environment. Whether it’s using responsibly-sourced packaging or limiting their delivery services to cut down on emissions, we love hearing about how everyone is coming together to help, on either a big or small scale. After all, when it comes to our precious planet, every little helps!
Learning about Davines haircare and Comfort Zone skincare’s “Rethinking Plastic” campaign – which, by the way, isn’t on a big or small scale, it’s global – once again the cockles of our hearts warmed up. The campaign, in partnership with Plastic Bank, is helping to raise awareness about plastic and prevent 100 tons of plastic from invading the oceans, while improving the quality of life for local populations involved in collecting plastic.
Social Plastic
So how does it work? By taking the local collectors’ plastic waste (in areas like Indonesia, Brazil and the Philippines) and exchanging them for premiums, which help provide basic family necessities such as groceries, school tuition and health insurance. When the swap has been done, Plastic Bank then ensure that the waste is reborn as Social Plastic, which can be easily reused in products and packaging. We think it’s genius, and Davines are championing it on all their social channels from now until the end of the year. “Our partnership with Davines represents a unique opportunity to reveal the value of plastic and make a direct impact in the effort to stop ocean plastic,” said David Katz, founder and CEO of Plastic Bank.
Rethinking packaging
And this isn’t the first time Davines has shown us commitment to the sustainability cause either. The brand already focus on either reusing and recycling as much as possible, along with reducing their use of materials and developing eco-friendly packaging that’s easier for consumers to dispose of. In fact, 60.5% of their packaging material used in 2020 was recycled and since making their packaging lighter, a whopping 630 tons of plastic have been saved from 2014 to 2020. So you won’t be surprised to know that Davines was given B Corp certification in 2016. This recognises companies committed to generating a positive impact on people and the environment. In short: it’s the sustainable beauty equivalent of winning an Academy Award, only without the long thank you speech and with much, much more kudos.
Davines, we like your sustainable style.
