We’ve had a keen eye on designers and eco-warrior-punks Vin+Omi for several seasons now. Their statement shows opening London Fashion Week are more of an event than a parade of clothing. Our interest was initially piqued by the Vin+Omi collaboration with Kao Salon Division and the KMS brand to be exact. What could be interesting and dynamic in uniting the various aims of hair, beauty, fashion and sustainability? Actually, a lot, and now we’re hooked.
Vin+Omi AW23
Fashion is the medium, not the message, for Vin+Omi. This designer partnership is more about activism than making attractive clothing, although they do that, too. Don’t fuck the planet, is the rallying cry. Think sustainability, and do it fast. And as a large corporation, Kao is of similar opinion. Now in its 3rd year, the design+hair partnership is going well. For this latest edition of London Fashion Week, KMS Style Ambassador, Sam Burnett, owner of Hare & Bone Salons, worked on the head-turning hair looks for the collections. Let’s take a look:
Hare & Bone hair
“For OMI’s Section 1, we created the hair looks using no heat tools at all and only one key styling product – the KMS Moist Repair Solid Shampoo. Hopefully, inspiring people and showing them how they can create the most on-trend looks in a really sustainable, energy and cost efficient way. The original 1970’s-80’s punks used soap to style their mohawks, so using KMS Solid Shampoo Bars is a brilliant, authentic and sustainable way to recreate this look, showing how to reinvent a textured punk essence for 2023. We also pre-made hair pieces to create spaced out braids and long ponytails with ombre colours, to emulate futuristic Club Kid.”
“With VIN’s Section 2, we went for a combination of slightly more natural looks, Anti-head shape alien-inspired bobs and headpieces.” The hair team prepped the hair and used gel to create a slicked-back, wet look taking sections of hair from the hairline to nape, adding deep comb lines, making them ridged. The Alien inspired bobs were given a grunge finish using a salt spray on dry hair.”
It’s an ongoing affair
This relationship looks set to run. Have a look at our previous Vin+Omi show reports and enjoy! The design master themselves say:
“We’re pleased to continue our relationship with KMS and Kao Salon in the UK. It’s a brand and business that puts sustainability at the forefront of its ethos and is dedicated to helping the wider salon industry become more sustainable for the benefit of salon businesses, their clients and the wellbeing of our planet.
“It’s great to collaborate to create such distinct hair looks for our show with sustainability at the heart of the creative process, from using no or as little electricity as possible to recreating the multi-use of solid shampoo not just as a shampoo but as a styling product. It’s all about taking what we have and using It In many different creative ways as possible – to use less to create more.”
