The art and legacy of textured hair

Any textured hair conversations get our vote, so we were delighted to see The Art and Legacy of Textured Hair event was happening. This evening gathering was hosted by Blue Tit and presented by stylist and afro and textured hair specialist, Pashcan’el Mitchell. All the best ingredients!

Guest list of dreams

For the event, Pashcan’el was joined on stage by four internationally-acclaimed guests from the world of textured hairdressing: Patricia Hope; Junior Green; Lathaniel Chambers, and Avlon educator Hannah-Marcia Larden.

Yes this was a showcase for Pashcan’el’s skill with Afro/textured hair. But importantly, it was a celebration and information exchange, helping to elevate the conversation around textured hair.

“You have to get uncomfortable to get comfortable. All of the panelists had their own struggles and challenges on their journeys, but they faced them head-on, which led them to where they are now,” explained Pash. “One thing we really emphasised was that, if you’re a salon owner or stylist, it’s okay not to know everything – but you should still be able to offer the basics. Every hairdresser should feel confident enough to handle anyone who walks through the door.”

Myth busting

Pash tells us the conversations on the night also dug deep into some common myths about textured hair. For example, the term “Afro” often gets confused with textured hair, but it’s actually a specific hairstyle from the 1960s. It’s not just a catch-all term for any black hair.

Other conversation starters included: How textured hairdressing has evolved over the years; the innovations shape the industry; and the truth and lies about caring for black hair.

Here’s to more events like this taking place in the future. Watch this space!
