Waste disposal in the hair and beauty industries continues to be a preoccupation as we’re still far from zero to landfill. The brands are working on their recyclable packaging and formula. But in the salon, we need to do more – and to be seen to be doing more by the clients. TerraCycle is a US-based international recycling company, and now launches SalonCycle. Promoting the venture as a recycling solution to help all hairdressers and salons, this is a way to become more sustainable and reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill and incineration. The premise is to offer you a convenient and simple system to implement. Just separate human hair from mixed waste of metal and plastic. That’s it!
SalonCycle will supply you with:
• A box for human hair, and another for mixed waste. The human hair box is for all clippings and trimmings, which are compostable
• A box for mixed waste which can include: Used hair foils, metal colour tubes, flexible and rigid plastic containers, disposable gloves and masks, empty coffee cups and food wrappers.

When developing SalonCycle we listened to salons and their biggest request was for a simple and easy to use solution that isn’t confusing for staff. How SalonCycle works:
· Order – Hairdressers, hair and beauty salons order SalonCycle boxes which are shipped directly to their salon.
· Collect – SalonCycle boxes are placed in designated high-traffic areas throughout the salon to easily collect the various categories of salon products and packaging.
· Ship – Once full, the salon sends the box(es) back to TerraCycle using the pre-affixed UPS shipping label.
· Recycle – When TerraCycle receives your box, the waste is sorted, cleaned and processed into raw materials. Human hair is industrially composted, while items like plastics, metals and rubber are processed and remoulded to make new recycled products like metal sheeting, flooring tiles, shipping pallets, and outdoor furniture.
