Peter Gray at Kalmin AW19 show

Kaiman FW 2019

Unafraid of edgy, provocative brands who want to create some noise, session stylist Peter Gray was an perfect fit to work on the Kalmin AW19 show at NYC Fashion Week. The brand presented its trademark, sexually-charged clubwear and Gray introduced the sharp-eyed fashionistas in the FROW to foundation cuts inspired by classic Sassoon geometry and the directional work of Zgat hairdressing group. We like the fierce combination of barely-there dresses that revealed more skin than fabric,  and super-sized detailing of others that included floor-grazing sleeves for example, with sharp hair work. Sponsored by the fabulous newcomer hair brand Anti, Gray and his Anti collective crew worked to achieve their look using drafting and model-making tools more often associated with an architect’s profession.

THE BRIEF

The hair brief from Kai and fashion stylist  Bill Mullen was to compliment the collection  inspired by futuristic modern architecture, especially the works of Zaha Hadid, with the emphasis on shine! “My team and I wanted the looks to be as individual as possible and for the hair to be ‘Graphic’ in the true sense of the word (ie: not just a fashion adjective!),” said ANTI collective Hair Director, Peter Gray. “Each garment had an individual architectural silhouette that we wanted to echo and I liked the idea of creating flat 2D shapes made of hair rather than the more obvious 3D approach.”

The press brief reported that ‘the entire collection was more a high-energy production than Fashion Show; pole dancers did their thing behind the models, and Brooke Candy  performed on the runway, twerking on delighted guests in the front row and giving an energy to the room beyond the realms of fashion.” You’ve got to love the theatre of the shows!
