EcoBeautyScore Consortium

In Uncategorized by Nicky

We bring you more good news for our planet! With a view to keeping abreast of the impact the beauty industry is having on the environment, 36 cosmetics and personal care companies, as well as professional associates, have joined forces to form the EcobeautyScore Consortium. Companies including Kao, L’Oréal Groups, Coty, the Estee Lauder Companies, and PZ Cussons have all joined up. Importantly the consortium remains open for all other companies to involve themselves too, regardless of their size or resources.

What’s the point?

The aim is to develop an industry-wide environmental impact assessment and scoring system for cosmetics products which will help provide consumers who want to buy better with clear and comparable information, based on a common science-based methodology. Indeed, a significant proportion of consumers (42%) is interested in buying brands that concentrate on circular and sustainable practices.

The work plan of the EcoBeautyScore Consortium will include
• a common method for measuring environmental impacts throughout the lifecycle of products
• a common database of the impact of standard ingredients and raw materials used in formulas and packaging as well as product usage
• a common tool that everyone can use which measures the impact that individual products, usable by non-experts, has on the environment
• a harmonized scoring system which enables companies to provide information to consumers about their products’ environmental footprint.

The 36 members have already started working together and a foot-printing and scoring prototype, first for a selection of product categories, is in the works for the end of this year.

Here’s hoping even more companies have decided to join forces with the consortium by then.
