Davines renews its partnership with Plastic Bank to continue recovering and removing ocean-bound plastic waste within 50 km of the coastlines. It is so inspiring to see brands chasing high standards of environmental responsibility. This partnership means that for every plastic-packed product that Davines sells in 2023, an equivalent amount of plastic will be collected and removed from coastal areas in Indonesia, the Philippines and Brazil. What a feat!
History
The Davines x Plastic Bank collaboration launched in 2021 with the ‘Rethinking Plastic’ campaign. In the past two years, Davines and Plastic Bank joint commitment removed 879 tons of plastic (equivalent to more than 44 million bottles) from the coasts of Brazil, the Philippines and Indonesia. 100 tons was collected in 2021, while the effort in 2022 removed an amount equal to the plastic Davines put on the market by selling its products. We love hearing that this effort will continue in 2023.
Davines says the collaboration underlines its sustainability values and is consistent with the regenerative development model that inspires its business strategy. The effort of Davines and Plastic Bank has prevented further degradation of vulnerable coastal areas and marine pollution by microplastics.
About Plastic Bank
In 10 years, Plastic Bank has prevented more than 80 million kilograms of plastic from entering the ocean. This amount is equal to four billion plastic bottles! The collected material is regenerated as a new raw material called Social Plastic.
Social plastic can be reused in products and packaging as part of a circular supply chain. The Plastic Bank’s local branches exchange plastic waste as currency to help families buy basic necessities. This includes food, fuel for cooking, school fees, health insurance, digital connectivity and fintech services. Offering families engaged in plastic collection safe, secure and traceable income sources has a huge social impact. Between 2020 and 2023, Davines and Plastic Banks’ efforts helped 3,202 people and their families.
Davide Bollati, chairman of the Davines Group, says:“The results achieved give us an insight into the positive impact that can be achieved and encourage us to continually improve. We have consolidated our collaboration with Plastic Bank because it is a project based on the interaction between environmental and social sustainability, with the aim of spreading a regenerative development model that combines progress with respect for the environment and human rights. This is a concrete commitment we have made because we are aware that packaging is among the areas with the greatest impact in the beauty industry. In addition to our collaboration with Plastic Bank, we are also committed to reducing our demand for plastic: since 2020 we have been measuring our plastic footprint, we use recycled or renewable plastic for our products, and thanks to eco-design we are progressively reducing the use of plastic in our packaging.”
David Katz, founder and CEO of Plastic Bank, says: “In our quest for Ocean Stewardship, we realized that recycling has to be human-powered. Impact contributions and the purchase of recycled materials alone cannot solve the plastic pollution crisis. Humanity needs a perpetual and persistent behavioral change, which brings the mindfulness of recycling in what we purchase, how we use it, and how we dispose of it”.
The collaboration between Davines and Plastic Bank fits into Davines’ strategy for sustainable growth. Davines has set a goal to abandon the use of virgin materials from fossil fuels. From 2014, when 100% of plastic packaging was made of virgin material from fossil fuels, to 2021 the percentage of fossil virgin plastic used has been reduced by nearly 63%. This was accomplished by switching to recycled or renewably sourced plastics.
Davines relies on eco-design principles for product packaging. This means thinner and lighter packaging with lower use of materials and a reduction in CO2 emissions. Thanks to these targeted interventions Davines has dramatically reduced its plastic footprint, avoiding using more than 841 tons.
