10 Quickfire

In a new short-read series Tribu-te poses 10 quick fire questions to people in the hairdressing industry to see what they reveal! Fun yet focussed is the intention – we hope you enjoy finding out more about our high-flying friends. This time it’s SALLY BROOKS who’s got the answers. Sally heads up the Brooks&Brooks salon in London with her partner Jamie Brooks. She won British Hairdresser of the Year in 2018 and 2019, and makes it her mission to promote hairdressing as the best career possible. A joy to watch on stage and in the seminar room, Sally is very definitely a vibrant name in the industry.

Sally Brooks

1) How many years have you been in hairdressing?
30 years.. wow!

2) Describe your signature hairdressing vibe?
Soft and feminine with a touch of drama
[see gallery below for some of her award-winning images shot with favourite photographer Jenny Hands]

3) What keeps you in hairdressing?
The people, the diversity, the love of my craft

4) Favourite piece of music?
Anything from the 80s really, that I can sing along to – badly!

5) What’s your Karaoke song?
‘I Will Survive!’ [by Gloria Gaynor]

6) Tell us a precious memory?
[See above] My mum wearing her wedding dress on their 50th wedding anniversary – it was so hideous and my dad’s face when she came out in it – lovely family 🙂

7) What do you love most about hairdressing?
The people that are in the industry – the united front of hairdressing – and the way we have all grown up together and respect each other

8) Your ideal place for relaxing?
On my potters wheel – or sitting in a beach listening to the waves

9) Best advice you were ever given?
Don’t chase money – just love what you do and be good at it. And the one my dad says: ‘The one thing we have is time, so no need to rush.’ It couldn’t be more true at the moment

10) Hope for hairdressing after this pandemic is tamed?
My hope is that we can find a way of returning to work very soon, and that we remember the important lessons we have learnt in this time. I hope that we help each other at the end of this, and that my clients haven’t done too much damage to their hair! I think the world will be a different place and we will all be different people. Hopefully some good will come out of this!

In 2019, to celebrate her year as British Hairdresser of the Year, Sally Brooks teamed up with film-maker Gabriel Maciuca to make ‘The Journey to my Destination‘. A documentary to encourage everyone to take up a career in hairdressing, this is a fantastic film to watch and now is the perfect time to a) watch again or for the first time b) share with your team c) promote to your wider family and friends. Let’s make hairdressing the focus. You can see it on Amazon Prime or order online.

THANKS SALLY!
