Tom Connell: Light. Time & Color

In Uncategorized by Nicky

Bravo for the first conceptual collection devised and created by Tom Connell as hair art director at Davines. He calls it ‘Light. Time & Color’ and describes the work as an integral part of his long-term cultural project “Portraits of People”. First admire the images, then delve into how they came to be:

Hair & Art Direction: Tom Connell • Colour: Ashleigh Hodges • Hair Assistant: Mathew Gavin, Grace Gebbie, Giuseppe Stelitano. Photography: Jon Gorrigan • Make Up: Jose Bass • Stylist: Steph Stevens • Product: Davines

Inspiration

The collection is about the interpretation of each woman’s individuality, going beyond hairstyling and the pure creation of a look to get closer, with multiple references to the world of fashion, music, architecture and design. Each portrait of this collection contains references to socio-cultural, musical and artistic contexts that have influenced Tom Connell’s perception, making this collection difficult to inscribe within the simple context of hairdressing, but rather making it very close to a work of art.

Colour

Working in collaboration with Ashleigh Hodges – who put huge amounts of time into creating just the right colour requested – Tom put colour right at the heart of this collection. First, people see the unusual shades of colour, the guide to interpreting the image. Each tone, although strong and original, is still sober and elegant, the meticulous development of the color shades is harmonious and reveals details and contrasts that are sometimes delicate and other times clear.

Photography

In a move away from digital photography, Tom’s vision was to photograph characterful people to contribute to his Portraits of People project. The whole project is shot on film in natural light without post editing to better enhance the reality and authenticity at the heart of the collection.
