The winners of The Big One Trophy 2020

In Uncategorized by Nicky

In a year of challenges we are delighted to roll out Tribu-te’s annual trophy competition and share the names of our winners of the The Big One Trophy 2020, that were announced today during our Facebook Live; hosted by UK Publisher of Tribu-te magazine, Nicky Pope and with nominees making their virtual appearances. For 30 minutes and with the aid of technology and social media, we got to bring our amazing community together to party, laugh and applaud familiar faces, friends and colleagues being awarded for their creativity. A different year

This is the second year of the UK edition of Tribu-te’s The Big One Trophy 2020, a competition well-established in Europe for 10 years. Incredibly, despite salons being closed for Lockdown, it has attracted more than 250 great portfolios across seven categories. And like the numbers, the standard was high. Announcing the 42 finalists in September, it was pleasing to see the enthusiasm, skill and range of creativity coming through in categories embracing commercial, editorial and experimental hairdressing, as well as for the salon design.

UK Publisher of Tribu-te magazine, Nicky Pope says: “This has been a coronacoaster of a year, and it’s been really uplifting to see our UK hairdressers continuing to be creative and challenge themselves with entries to The Big One.”

Key to this premium contest is that entrants didn’t need to shoot in a studio, or create specific collections of photography to show their skills. The Big One is more interested in seeing how hair professionals work in the real world, and the range of skills, taste and imagination they possess in order to succeed both creatively and in the salon.

Notably paying respect to the surge in awareness for #blacklivesmatter this summer, the Tribu-te Magazine team renamed the erstwhile trophy The One For Texture as The One For Afro. Nicky Pope explains: “Our industry is inclusive and on the advice of our Black Advisory Panel, we decided it was important to champion the need for hairdressers to work on Afro hair types in particular. Every hair can be said to be textured in some way; working on Afro hair requires specific skill and understanding.

The winners

Deciding the winners, a panel of 14 judges included leading hairdressers from UK salons, industry professionals from the three sponsor brands, and the global publishing team from Tribu-te magazine. Each of the category winners should feel proud… and stand up for hairdressing like the elephant on top of the world. And one overall winner who scored the highest mark across the entire awards competition is named The Big One 2020.

The winners are:

THE ONE FOR YOUR CLIENT 2020: Danilo Giangreco

THE ONE FOR COLOUR 2020: Marlon J Hawkins

THE EXPERIMENTAL ONE 2020: Emmanuel Esteban

THE UP & COMING ONE 2020: Michael Rackett

THE TEAM ONE 2020: Danilo Hair Boutique

THE ONE FOR AFRO 2020: Anne Veck

THE DESIGN ONE 2020: Westrow Leeds

THE BIG ONE 2020: Emmanuel Esteban

Emmanuel Esteban is the winner of The Experimental One and The Big One

Going forward, Emmanuel Esteban’s work is on the cover of Tribu-te magazine Winter edition – out in December – and all the winners will be featured regularly online and in the pages of Tribu-te magazine and on Instagram.

Awards are integral to our industry and Tribu-te is super-grateful to three sponsors. It is brilliant to have brands recognising both established and up and coming talents. Bravo to Great Lengths, L’Oréal Professionnel, and Paul Mitchell for their support and enthusiasm.
