Yes! You can believe it. Summer’s on its way and salons will be open to welcome clients. Once you’ve coped with the first wave of anxiety about reviving styles, colour and condition, it will be time to get creative. Trends may not be as clear as usual without the catwalks, music scene or red-carpet to influence the consumer, but Alterna Europe shows us how there are still vogues to watch for and prepare.
Identifying the long, the mid and the short of it, we’re happy to pass on the advice of Joana Neves, session stylist who learned her craft essentially with Neil Moodie. She’s spent more than 10 years now on teams headed by the likes of Sam McKnight, James Pecis and Syd Hayes, as well as being a regular with Guido Palau. Her fashion nous is invaluable in another of her important roles, as editorial director at Alterna Europe. Here’s Joana’s take on the upcoming season’s hair trends with a lovely collection shot by photographer Jack Eames.
“The mid-length haircut used to be seen as an awkward style that clients would have to experiment with when growing their bob out, but now, it’s more on trend than ever, with many client’s asking in salons for this haircut specifically. The beauty of this length is that it suits everyone and gives client’s the versatility to style their hair or leave it natural. For me, I love enhancing this hairstyle when it’s damp and leaving the hair to air dry.”
Joana’s product choice for this cut includes: My Hair. My Canvas. Shine On Defining Foam applied to damp hair, adds moisture, smoothness and shine. Any Day Texture Spray enhances waves for that just off the beach look that looks perfect paired with mid length hair. If cut bluntly, a mid-length cut looks super chic and stylish and this can further be enhanced with the help of volumising products such as My Hair. My Canvas. More To Love Bodifying Shampoo and Conditioner.
Long and luscious
“The Lockdown period has allowed this to be more possible, with client’s being able to let our hair grow out, do more regular treatments and masks and by using less heat on their hair and instead, experimenting with styles that need no heated styling. When it comes to having longer locks, moisture and hydration are key to keep hair looking its very best, free from split ends and damage.”
Joana’s choice for this length hair includes: Alterna Caviar Replenishing Moisture range includes; Replenishing Moisture Shampoo and Conditioner; Priming Leave-in Conditioner; Leave-in Conditioning Milk; Masque; CC Cream; and Leave-in Smoothing Gelée. All of which can be used to make the hair more manageable, shiny and to achieve a youthful and healthy look.
Super short pixie
“The super-short pixie is back with a bang for SS21! A perfect hairstyle for those who want to enhance their facial features and who want less hair to manage throughout the warmer months. This style can be tailored to suit the client’s face shape and is great for making eyes really pop. This haircut can be styled with a texturising spray to give it a more relaxed, effortless and messy finish. Or it can be worn more wet in appearance for a chic, catwalk ready finish, perfect for nights out on the town and special events.”
Joana recommends: Alterna Caviar Professional Styling’s Luxe Crème Gel adds shape, shine and definition to the hair whilst also restoring hydration, strength, vibrancy and elasticity due to the effective ingredients within this gorgeous product.
“In terms of hairstyles, buns, low ponytails and braids are amongst the top hairstyle trends this spring/summer – low maintenance styles that require no heated styling but can be enhanced with the use of styling products.”
Joana’s go-tos: Alterna’s My Hair. My Canvas. Any Way Texturising Spray is a great way to add texture to braids and low ponytails. It can be scrunched into the hair damp or dry, providing the hairstyle with flexibility whilst allowing it to be long-lasting. When creating a bun hairstyle, I love to use the ALTERNA My Hair. My Canvas. Another Day Dry Shampoo. This product is perfect to use before creating any updos, giving the hair added grit and volume whilst refreshing the hair and giving it a soft appearance and feel.
