An arresting title for a collection, Oracle Pendulum is by Justin Pace – a hairdresser and colourist in Australia – the AHIA Hairdresser of the Year 2023 and a hugely accomplished hair artist. Working with photographer Andrew O’Toole, Justin used wigs, colours, texture and movement to imbue his collection with spirit and intrigue.
The title explained: Oracle Pendulum
An oracle is a person through whom a deity speaks. A pendulum, with acquired momentum, swings freely. This collection title represents a person through whom a deity speaks swinging freely between two realms – earth and the cosmos.
The wigs create a personal connection, using handcrafted pieced to distort skull contour, with structural bases of millinery material. Heat sticks, irons and glue guns were employed to manipulate shapes. Square, round and angled geometric elements, also incorporated a commercial aspect with razored haircuts and shattered lines. The images use a dark to light interplay – we love the black and blonde polarities. A teal shade on the backdrop lends a more contemporary or futuristic feel.
Justin says that to individualise each look whilst maintaining cohesiveness, he used a variation of straight (smooth / shiny) and curly (grainy / raw) textures.
