Lawless

Only a few days ago, we were delighted to announce our winners of our annual competition, The Big One Trophy 2020, during a Facebook Live show, packed with great vibes and strong emotions; hosted by UK Publisher of Tribu-te magazine, Nicky Pope and with nominees making their virtual appearances. One of the winners was Anne Veck. Anne took our breath away with her stunning collection Lawless, that gave her the title of winner of the One For Afro 2020.

A special win

This is a very special win as this year, the Tribu-te magazine team renamed the erstwhile trophy The One For Texture as The One For Afro, notably paying respect to the surge in awareness for #blacklivesmatter this summer. On the advice of our Black Advisory Panel, we decided it was important to champion the need for hairdressers to work on Afro hair types in particular as it requires extra skills and knowledge, and call it what it is, not generally texture.

Totally excited for this win, Anne said: ‘‘What an absolute thrill it was to win the One For Afro at The Big One awards! I am truly over the moon! I really value the recognition for all the hard work myself and my team- especially photographer Desmond Murray- put in to create this collection. Thank you so much!”

Regarding her inspiration for Lawless, Anne explains: ”Black hair is still considered provocative and even lawless. Afro hair isn’t seen as the norm and many black women feel the need to hide their natural hair in order to progress. In my Lawless collection I simply want to celebrate the beauty and strength of black women and black hair. From my hairdressing perspective, not offering afro/textured hair services to people with afro/textured hair is the same as not offering services to people with red hair.”
