We love seeing super-successful hairdressers celebrating a return to their roots. No matter how far you go, never forget where you came from is what it’s all about. Celebrity hairstylist and educator Michael Gray has done just this. He recently marked 20 years in the hair industry with a special “homecoming” masterclass at St Mary’s Guildhall in Coventry.
It was a poignant reminder how the one-time Saturday boy in a salon has become a well-travelled session stylist. But there’s still no place like home.
Bravo Michael
Welcoming hair professionals, former mentors, lecturers, friends and industry peers, Michael hosted an afternoon of education, storytelling and celebration. The venue was the historic backdrop of one of Coventry’s most iconic buildings. Magnificent and beautiful. With the drinks flowing and the conversation hot, Michael demonstrated three signature looks on live models. He narrated both his expert styling techniques, with a large dose of career advice and honest reflections on the highs and lows that have shaped his two decade career.
Homecoming boy
Returning to Coventry was a conscious decision for Michael, who described the event as deeply personal. He tells us: “Holding this event in Coventry meant everything to me. It wouldn’t have meant as much had I done it anywhere else. This is where my journey started, with the people who supported me, believed in me and helped shape my career.”
Michael reflected on his journey from college student to celebrity session stylist. He credited the mentors and education that gave him the confidence to build a freelance career long before it became commonplace in the industry. Touchingly, in the audience were Michael’s former lecturers, as well as his former employer, Lynn. Michael credits her with supporting him to “spread his wings” and pursue opportunities beyond salon life.
Aged 19, Michael saved money to complete a Vidal Sassoon course in London. He describes this as transformative, one sparking ambitions beyond working solely behind the chair.
“If I hadn’t had the foundation of college and amazing mentors, I wouldn’t be where I am today. A lot of people do what I do now without ever having worked in a salon, but for me, those foundations mattered.”
Travel permit
Now working entirely freelance, Michael’s career spans celebrity styling, education, editorial work and private clients, with no two weeks looking the same. Known for working with names including Ashley James and Pixie Lott, Michael used the masterclass not only to celebrate his own journey, but to inspire the next generation of hair professionals. It’s about honest conversations on confidence, resilience and building a career in hairdressing.
A Time Wall at the masterclass documented Michael’s 20-year career journey. He offered luxury goodie bags to guests, and conducted a live audience Q&A,.
“The room was full of love and laughter,” says Michael. “We don’t celebrate our achievements enough, and this was one of the proudest moments of my life.”
We add our congratulations from the team at Tribu-te Magazine, too!
