Hair Pieces 2023 is a triumph

In Uncategorized by Nicky

This is the third year of hosting Hair Pieces – our immersive hair show, and we’re growing in stature! The 2023 edition held earlier this week in Battersea Arts Centre was a joy to us at Tribu-te and our guests in the audience declared themselves very happy!

Here’s how the evening unfolded:

The Joy of Live

The Summer edition of Tribu-te this year was dedicated to the joy of live events, and publisher Nicky Pope reminded the audience how important it is to turn up in person to share, inspire and collaborate! This is the best way to celebrate each other, cement friendships and partnerships, and promote the skill and passion of the hairdressing craft, she told them.

Hair Pieces 2023

Hair Pieces is arranged so that working hair teams are placed around the venue in their own space. No brief, no limits – they have 2 hours to share their inspirations, concepts and hair creativity. The audience is free to roam, stopping where they wish and talking with the hair teams if they want.

Darren Ambrose and Jamie Brooks: 10 Minutes with…

For 2023, the programme included six creative shows and insallations, plus the ‘10 Minutes with…’ interview platform sponsored by L’Oréal Professionnel Paris. Here five of the best UK hairdressers were invited to share their experience and views on live hair shows. It all gave the audience plenty to enjoy as they listened. Darren Ambrose, Sally Brooks, Cos Sakkas, Zoë Irwin and Adam Reed talked with interviewers John Spanton, Jamie Brooks, Marlon Hawkins and Jo O’Neill.

Invited artists

This year we welcomed six different artists or teams. The magic is in seeing the diverse choice of hair they want to share. Take a look at our line-up.. with photography courtesy of David Hindley.

Simon Webster and his hair art team worked on a spellbinding representation of the 70s film Wicker Man. With astonishing detail in headdresses and costumes, Simon totally absorbed the ‘hair pieces’ concept. The photography reveals ‘Pagan, Wicca, Druidry, Asatru’ terms that refer to non-Christian/Abrahamic religions, beliefs and the birth, growth, death spiritual cycle. Utterly fabulous!

Tomer Nagar and Darja Lätt are part of the Toni&Guy Art Team and work closely with artistic director Efi Davies. Their avant-garde hair work is meticulously detailed and surreal, yet manages to embue also the brand’s link with fashion. Four models on the finale parade were a triumph for these two young hairdressers.

Sanrizz Academy brought their latest collection to life as they demonstrated how they put the photography together with a ‘shoot-set’. Leonardo and Rudi Rizzo, and Sharon Cox are adept at transforming high-street looks into cooler-than-cool styles. Their assured presenting and a dynamic set were popular with all our guests as Sanrizz made their Tribu-te show debut.

Kathryn Dartnell and Miabella Alomassor represented the Oribe brand with a masterclass in styling delivered with elegance and panache. Texture in braiding and curl was the theme, with the team using layering of products to awesome effect. They prepared two contemporary cool-yet-vampish models… eye-catching indeed. The FAME Team 2023 made their first appearance for Tribu-te Magazine as they closed a year of working with mentor Sally Brooks. Pop-culture, youth-punkish looks were skillfully created in front of the audience; think graffiti, denim, and masses of attitude. We appreciate the cleverness of their work. And yes, we were impressed.

Enrica Russo was awarded The Big One 2022 and her live presentation at this year’s show reminded us why. Her incredible way with weaving, braiding and sculpting hair belies her age and years in the industry. She is confident and strikingly good! Since taking the top gong last year, she’s been featuring on many awards ceremonies and you will do well to follow her progress.

It was a spectacular reminder of the power of hair shows. Inspiring and entertaining – coming together to celebrate and share skills this way is so important.
