Dylan McConnachie

Dylan McConnachie is a London-based hairdresser working in leading city salons with a high-end client base for both cut and colour. He also loves playing with avant-garde looks and is often listed in finalist line-up for high-profile industry competitions. In October 2019, he scooped the title of The Experimental One in our inaugural The Big One contest. And since The Big One is back now, we thought it would be a great opportunity to catch up with him and see what he’s been up to.

  1. What did it mean to win The Experimental One trophy in the first year of launch?

D: Winning was something I really didn’t expect, I feel when you enter competitions, you always want to succeed, but when it actually happens, you can’t believe it! For me it shows me that my work continues to be acknowledged! My goal is to become an ambassador for the new generation coming in to our craft!

  1. Do you often enter competitions?

I do, I like to push myself as hard as I can, as it means I have worked hard to get to there! And to win an accolade makes the experience even better!

  1. Have you enjoyed showing your trophy off to family/clients?

My clients, friends and family love seeing my achievements, and it shows that my support network is huge. This means more to me than anything!

      4. Where is it displayed?

The trophy is at the bar in my Salon for all to see! And it faces me everyday 🙂

  1. How do you describe your hairdressing signature style of work?

I am a lover for all things avant-garde, texture, shape and structure… I like to create things with hair that don’t really exist, and make it more of an art form rather than a hairstyle, and I love it because it’s so experimental.

  1. How have you found this first half of 2020?

2020 has so far been an interesting also successful year so far. I spent my free time on really developing myself as an artist. Also, I became a finalist for 6 Awards which included Wella Trend Vision and Colour World Colour Genius Awards.

  1. What do you hope for the rest of the year?

It sounds so cliche… but I want everyone to enjoy going back to the job we love doing! It’s going to be different for sure but I think as an industry, hairdressers are the most powerful people on the planet! My goal is to reclaim my title for The Experimental One for the Big One Trophy and then finalise for the British Hairdressing Awards.

  1. What advice can you give someone thinking of entering The Big One 2020?

Don’t think twice! Just enter, it’s all about the process and learning! And as hairdressers we need to constantly evolve and take ourselves out of our comfort zones! I didn’t expect to become a finalist for the Big One, let alone win.. but I find if you push yourself hard enough, you will surprise yourself!
