Shaping Futures

Changing lives and shaping futures

In Uncategorized by Nicky

Schwarzkopf Professional promotes education, empowerment and community through its global charity initiative, Shaping Futures. The intention is to help disadvantaged young adults build brighter futures through hairdressing. And regular news updates confirms it’s really happening.

Shaping Futures was founded with one clear purpose: To empower socially disadvantaged young adults by teaching them the craft of hairdressing. Not only does it give the means to earn a living, but also supports confidence self-esteem. Stats show the initiative has supported more than 3,500 young adults across 33 countries. We love this commitment to using hairdressing as a vehicle for independence, opportunity and long-term change.

2026 project

Earlier this year, Shaping Future returned to the Philippines, where a new group of students completed an intensive six-week training course. It was led by volunteer hairdressers from around the world including the UK.  The agenda combined foundational hair theory with practical salon skills including cutting, styling, consultation and customer care. The programme is designed to give participants the tools they need to pursue employment in the hair industry and build a more secure future.

Shaping Futures

Over six weeks,  Schwarzkopf Professional ambassadors Suzie McGill and Kevin Kahan joined the international volunteer team in the Philippines. And their delight and sense of purpose is evident in these heart-warming photographs.

Kevin tells us: “I’ve trained so many people throughout my career, and sometimes you do think you’ve experienced everything. But volunteering with Shaping Futures was completely different. These young adults have overcome so much and knowing that the skills you’re teaching them could genuinely change the direction of their lives gives the experience a whole new meaning.

“Every day, teaching these young people was an absolute joy – and they also taught me so much! I’ll never forget the experience, and I have thought about it every day since I’ve returned home. I would love to have the opportunity to do it again and it’s been the most amazing charity to support.”

SOS Children’s Villages

Shaping Futures works in tandem with S.O.S. Children’s Village to offer structured vocational education to young adults facing social and economic disadvantage. Many of the course attendees have limited access to formal training or employment opportunities.  The wish is to see graduates go on to secure employment after completing the course, enabling them to support themselves and their families. Vitally, this helps break cycles of poverty within their communities.

How does it work?

Each volunteer involved in the programme self-funds their trip, donating not only their time and expertise, but also a personal commitment to making a meaningful difference.

By investing in the next generation and using the craft of hair to create real opportunity, the programme continues to change lives around the world – one future at a time.
