Calligraphy Cut is a way of cutting hair devised by German salon owner and stylist, Frank Brorman. Working with a hair tool that resembles a pen, but incorporates a single blade to cut hair, Calligraphy Cut is shared with us as pretty new in the UK, but in fact, it’s been around for some time in Europe and the USA – with plenty of endorsement on the benefits. Now you’ll be seeing more about Calligraphy Cut in the UK as the method, and the cutting tool, is being launched at Salon International this October. At the exhibition on 14-16 October, (tickets HERE) you can meet Frank who’s presenting alongside Ky Cut Wilson, Dan Smith Humphriss, Nicola Smyth and Edoardo Colassanti.

About Calligraphy Cut

Let’s look into what Frank Brormann has created. Frank’s new innovation offers you a selection of hand-crafted blades and equipment, and a digital education platform to learn from. The concept is this: With Calligraphy Cut, you can ‘break down old patterns and learn something new.

Inspired by watching a florist at work – cutting stems diagonally to allow the flowers to absorb more water, Frank noticed that using scissors to do this, pinched the stems. Whereas using a sharp knife was cleaner and left the surface area larger to take up nutrients. Should be the same for hair, he figured!

Calligraphy Cut

Sure enought… cutting diagonally across the end of each hair strand creates a much softer look and maximises the surface area of the hair. This allows each strand to absorb the most amount of moisture from haircare products. This means that it can prevent split ends and help with hair health over time.

To make this method work, Frank designed the Calligraphy Cut pen. This is a hand-crafted piece of equipment with a 3° inclined sharp blade that cuts constantly at an angle of 21°. In your hands, it  glides smoothly through the hair, helping you create sleek and tailored finishes. Essentially, the Calligraphy Cut pen will give you more volume, fewer split ends, more shine and healthy hair.

Penmanship details

Each Calligraphy Cut pen is made in Germany. The ergonomic-grip zone is comfortable and optimally balanced, even for left-handers. Bonus! The sharp, stainless steel blade is safely embedded in the cutting head. The sharpness of the blade compares with  Japanese blades and has an extremely clean edge. If you’re interested in precision cutting, a Calligraphy Cut pen is for you. And if you’re not a precision fiend, it’s also for you. The pen works on all textures, types, or length, including bobs, pixie cuts, and curly textures.

Online education

The simple online training course that Calligraphy Cut offers will show you how to get creative with the pen. With three different customer membership levels for replacement pens, support and training, you can choose how to integrate this revolutionary cutting system into your salon or business. It is easy to understand and simple to create beautiful and stylish hair quickly.
