While many hope that awareness of the need for sustainable practices in our work and home is a given, research shows we’re not there yet. So as you spring-clean your salons and studios, here is some amazing inspo from Butchers salon group for what you might do better.
Butchers do it better
Our vision for improved sustainability turns to Butchers salon group. Last Summer they scooped the title ‘Best sustainable Aveda salon in the World’. The three Butchers salons based in London’s Shoreditch district, in Chester and in Leicester, prove to be inclusive, responsible and environmentally conscious in all they do. Here’s how:
From gender-neutral pricing to responsible product choices and an ongoing focus on reducing waste, the group has positioned itself as a leader in eco-conscious hairdressing. Importantly, as part of its long-term vision, Butchers is working towards becoming a carbon-neutral salon group. They have even appointed a team member to the role of Green Leader, overseeing environmental initiatives and tracking progress.
How it goes
Butchers has also implemented a series of practical, but impactful changes across its salons:
• They use compostable Scrummi towels, which biodegrade within 12 weeks
• Plant-based cleaning products come from Bio-D, made in the UK using ethically sourced ingredients and 100% recycled packaging
• The group actively encourages clients to make more environmentally conscious choices, creating a shared responsibility between stylist and guest when it comes to greener haircare.
Co-founder Susannah Richardson says: “Being recognised on a global stage means everything to us, not because of the title but because of what it represents. Every decision we’ve made, from the products we stock to the way we price our services, has been intentional. This is 12 years of quiet conviction finally being seen.
“This belongs to every person who has ever sat in one of our chairs and chosen to trust us and every member of our team who has shown up believing that a salon can be run differently. They were right.”
