BRETT macdonald

Brett Macdonald, owner and creative director of CULt Education, is an alumni of the Sassoon Academy with many nominations and awards. His lasting dream has been the creation of a cutting edge brand, a space which combines the different schools of style into an inclusive new approach to hairdressing. CULt is the realisation of that dream. In October 2019, Brett scooped the title of The One For Your Client in our contest, The Big One. And since The Big One is back again and running, we thought it would be a great opportunity to catch up with Brett and chat about competitions, trophies and…hairdressing!

1. What did it mean to win The One For Your Client trophy in the first year of launch – 2019

It was a very proud moment for me personally as this was the first official award for the business and  CULt.

2.  Do you often enter competitions?

I try to submit my work where possible. Competitions are a great way of getting out in the industry and a fun creative process.

3.  Have you enjoyed showing it off to family/clients?

The winning photo

Yes!! My mother back home in quiet Australia loves the photos from the night in the beautiful London theatre.

4.  Where is it displayed?

I keep all of my Trophies at home as I have accidentally left and  lost some at a salon in the past and now I’m much more careful.

5.  How do you describe your hairdressing signature style of work?

Modern, Simple & Elegant.

6. How have you found this first half of 2020?

Testing! The first 1/4 of 2020 was busier then the whole of 2019 for CULt. Education  so the situation has been disappointing. I LOVE educating and not being able to sink my teeth into creative shows and courses has been tough.

7.  What do you hope for the rest of the year?

I hope we can get on with projects. I have had meetings with existing and new clients internationally so I do feel things can get moving soon.

8. What advice can you give someone thinking of entering The Big One 2020?

Pick the category well for your images. And get many different options on your best work to entry. Sometimes images you like because of technique in cut/colour are not as great as a total image and can in fact let you down.
