Anne Veck at university

Back to school for everyone and that goes for Anne Veck, too, … in a manner of speaking. The award-winning Anne Veck Salon in Oxford is the case study for a new course based on sustainability and offered at University of Glasgow. That’s a double wow! from us.

Course details

The four-week online course at Glasgow University, Tackling Climate Change: Sustainable Business Models for a Circular Economy, is aimed at both the public and business owners and aims to demonstrate how circular economies enable sustainability and help respond to the climate emergency. This isn’t just for hairdressers – it applies more widely. Interesting, right?!

The syllabus comprises 12 hours of learning, with insight into the Anne Veck business model featuring in week two. The case study includes contributions from salon founders Anne Veck and Keith Mellen (life and business partners) themselves, and explores how they made the transition from a linear business to a sustainable salon that enables a circular economy.

The couple have spent the last few years making adjustments on both a personal and professional level to introduce sustainable measures that make a real difference. As a result, Anne Veck Oxford is the first salon business in the UK to be certified carbon neutral* – an accolade held since 2019. Yep, quite an achievement.

Keith Mellen & Anne Veck

And they are the brains behind Salon Re:Source, a digital ‘toolkit’ created to educate stylists and salon owners on the actions they can take in order to become a more sustainable business. Available free of charge, it offers everything from easy, low-cost ‘baby steps’ to larger measures which require more considerable planning and investment.

Course co-creator Elaine Heslop is an Honorary Fellow University of Glasgow and a sustainability consultant in the city of Oxford. As a client and long-time admirer of the salon’s sustainable ethos, Elaine was ‘proud’ to work with the duo, finding them ‘deeply inspiring’ both in terms of the salon and what they have achieved in leading change in the industry at large.

‘We were delighted to contribute to this insightful new course’ says Keith. ‘I hope that the evolution of our business will inspire others to make changes that consider people and the planet, and to look at ways of introducing circular solutions into both their lives and their businesses.’

It’s been quite a year of change for Anne Veck and business partner/ husband Keith Mellen – a dynamic pair who work tirelessly to support creative and sustainable hairdressing in equal measure. We kicked off in January when we talked about their proactive approach to tackling climate change in a feature HERE.   And followed their journey in working on a massive show for Davines this Summer (see HERE) which had them driving from Oxford to Parma in Italy might we add, in support of their belief in using less energy! Anne’s gorgeous collection for Afro hair is featured in the Summer edition of Tribu-te HERE   We’re thrilled that Anne will join us for the grand finale show for The Big One in November – more of that later.
