Artists reference

In Uncategorized by Nicky

We talk often about how artists reference culture outside hairdressing as inspiration for their hair looks. Three shows caught our attention at London Fashion Week for doing just this…

Huishan Zhang SS25, London

The latest collection from this designer explores the power of love and desire expressed through the details of dress. The clothes are influenced by The Hand, a short film directed by Wong Kar-Wai, for the 2004 anthology, Eros. On screen, a young tailor falls for a beautiful and enigmatic client, and Huishan Zhang’s collection celebrates the idea of sensuality. Leading the hair team, Johanna Cree Brown devised hair looks that were carefully curated to enhance this aesthetic.

Johanna tells us: “The hair brief was that all girls had to have their hair off the faces and all hair had to have symmetry. Working with this brief, I decided to do a glossy, glued-down, slightly gothic chignon. By working with square lines and sections and positioning  the chignon asymmetrically, we ensured it didn’t look too much like a wedding or ballerina style. It needed to be elegant yet cool.

Mithridate SS25, London

The Mithridate SS25 collection was a tribute to the Creative Director’s Yunnan roots: a southwestern province of China, known for its breathtaking landscapes, vibrant ethnic diversity and rich cultural traditions. They blended local traditions with a modern aesthetic to create an unforgettable collection.

Lead hair stylist Johanna Cree Brown created a striking hairstyle that embodied the essence of the collection. She tells us: “This year I felt braids were the way to go, so I wanted to do something that had a bit more of an elevated feel for the power woman in her collection.”

Chet Lo SS25, LondonAnna Cofone for Chet Lo SS25

Chet Lo’s collections are often deeply personal and for SS25 he celebrates the bond between him and his mother Mai-Wah Cheung and her work in computer sciences, digital media, art and education.

Anna Cofone is global creative advocate for Authentic Beauty Concept, and created the hair looks: “The hair, which is inspired directly by the clothing, seeks to create a thread across the distinct patterns mimicked in the hair, but also as an evolution from the first collection that I worked with Chet back in September 2022, which also consisted of printed veils.  The patterned veils sit on beautifully groomed hair that is hydrated and healthy.”

Key products: Authentic Beauty Concept Amplify Mousse, Glow Spray Serum, and Working Hairspray.

Thank you London Fashion Week SS25

Artists references from personal experience, location and culture are vividly seen in all the above. We love them!
