A collection that appears calm and poised, yet when you study it, the portraits are of strong, self-assured models. A sense of movement and energy brings something to these stunning portraits by hairdresser Mimi Kobayashi at Billi Currie salon in London. Enjoy!

Mon.o: The inspiration

Mimi’s country of birth is Japan, and she fused this with her experiences of living in the UK. She works with a juxtaposition between Japanese and British culture.

“The cultures of both countries form my roots, and both influence my work immensely. With this collection I took the spirituality of Japanese ‘zen’ –meaning peace and calm – and combined it with the edginess, style and tone of contemporary London.

The result is soft, whimsical looks but with strength and movement. The mix of textures and layering showcases the British influence while the character and feel reflect the spirit and essence of Japanese zen.
