We love the brave signature style of session stylist and Schwarzkopf Professional global ambassador Nick Irwin. His shows for fashion weeks are always intriguing so we happily joined him in London to see backstage for Sabirah and Labrum London. One thing Nick excels at, is ensuring hair is a key part of the design story.
Sabirah AW24 with Nick Irwin
For the Sabirah collection, entitled 1.7 Glamorously Modest‘, Nick explains the inspiration is the actress Dominque Deveraux. She played the first main Black character role in hit TV show Dynasty in the 80s. The mood for hair and clothing, was super glam, immaculate and coordinated.
Nick, summarises the hair: “It’s all about power dressing and tapping into that 80s muse, so we used false pieces – frontals – to create ‘cartoon-style hair’ and exaggerate the shapes and silhouettes to complement the overall style.”While taking strong influence from the 80s, Nick brings the looks up-to-now with detailing – often a ‘bit that’s off’ – to ensure he’s not simply recreating. This is about exploring the muse, not simply copying.
Labrum London with Nick Irwin
Titled ‘Designed By An Immigrant: Journey of Colours’, the Labrum London show celebrated 10 years of the brand. The story was celebrating the routes the designer has taken from Sierra Leone in West Africa – where he was born – to travel to this moment.
